-: United Colours of Harmony :-

Colours play an important part in your Home Decor process. Colours are what give life and personality to your room. Here are some facts to keep in mind when deciding over colours.

1. If you are using many colours in one single room, make sure you use a colour at least three times in the same room. You could use shades and tints of that colour. For example, your curtains, pillows and tablecloth can be of the same colour. This gives a look of harmony and help avoid the 'too much' and 'confused' look.

2. For filling space, use warm colours like reds, yellows and oranges. They tend to grab the eye and fill the space and are soothing and warm.

3. For giving an illusion of more and open space, use cool colours like blues, greens and violets.

4. For a serene and comforting look, use pale pinks. The closer pink gets to red, the more energetic it becomes.

5. Use vertical stripes on walls and curtains for an illusion of height.

6. Light coloured walls and ceilings make the room look larger and more spacious.

7. Try to avoid contradicting colours and themes. If you want your room to look larger and need to use cool colours to achieve it, choose a theme which goes with cool colours.

8. If same-coloured sofa, carpet and other upholstery give a monotonous look, use colourful cushions and wall-hangings to break the monotony.

9. Long or large room. Try painting a warm colour on one wall in a predominately white room. The warm wall will appear to advance, making the room seem smaller or shorter.

10. Short room. Paint one wall a cool color, while leaving the rest of the walls warm. The cool wall will appear to draw back, making the room seem longer.

11. High ceilings. If you want a more intimate feel in a room with high ceilings, paint the ceiling a darker color. You can also lower it further by painting the top part of the wall (say, 12" or so) with
the same ceiling color.

12. Low ceilings. If you want to make the ceilings appear higher, paint the ceiling a light color and bring the wall color 6' or so onto the ceiling.

13. Another trick for making the walls appear higher is to paint the baseboards the same color as the walls. This makes the room appear taller (just like in fashion!)
