Ask any woman what Quilt is and she would describe it as a big piece of cloth made out of lot of little pieces, sewed to another plain piece of cloth, with batting in between. But quilts can be described much more than a textile sandwich. Its warm tactile quality makes the person sleeping under feel sheltered from cold and life’s harshness.
Modern quilters have sophisticated tools and techniques compared to the primitive methods used by eighteenth century quilters. Often without a ruler or compass, they draft complicated patterns and piece them meticulously using folded paper and trial and error. Today’s quilters would not think of using pre-used fabrics as it was widely done in the past. In fact, many have become ‘fabric-holics’, hoarding great quantities of cloth.
Although quilts commonly have been made using cloth left over from a previous generation, the fabric is itself is the primary clue to figuring the approximate age of a quilt. Colours are significant clues to quilt’s history.
