The interior goods market has been on a growth cycle in Japan - total sales volumes in the Japanese interiors industry are estimated at about US$36 billion, with imported products steadily increasing in popularity.
One reason for this growth is the aging population's desire to make their home surroundings more comfortable. Also, young families and those under 40 are spending more time at home, many with less money to spend than their seniors. There are also a higher proportion of unmarried women in their 20s and 30s living in Japan than ever before, and many of them have their own apartments, constituting a significant and particularly trend-conscious segment of the consumer base.
